This document describes how to use the Macintosh Installer to install Version 3.7.3 of the following Shiva products on a Macintosh computer: Shiva Config, Dial-In Network Access, Shiva Modems, and the Shiva Chooser extensions.

Hardware and Software Versions

Version 3.7.3 requires Macintosh System 6.0.7 or later and the following ROM and Image versions:

Shiva recommends using AppleTalk Version 57.0.3 on all Macintosh systems running System 6.0.7, 6.0.8, or 7.0. This is especially important if you are using the Quadra 700, which has AppleTalk bugs that are fixed by Version 57.0.3.
If you are using the Shiva LanRover/L, install AppleTalk Version 57.0.3 for improved performance under the AppleTalk Remote Access Protocol (ARAP).
The Easy Install procedure includes AppleTalk Version 57.0.3. There is a “57.0.3 for System 6" and a “57.0.3 for System 7."

Before You Begin
---------------
You must disable any anti-virus software (such as Disinfectant, Virex or SAM) before installing the Shiva software, because the Shiva software is installed with Apple Installer 3.2, and Apple requires that all anti-virus INITs be off.
Failure to disable anti-virus software may result in corruption of the System File.
As a precaution, if you are using Virex software on your Macintosh, remove it from the hard disk drive, not just the system folder, prior to running the Apple Installer. Shiva is doing further evaluations of the interaction of Virex, the Apple Installer, and Shiva installation scripts. There have been some reported problems when Virex versions prior to 3.8 are present on the hard drive during installation.
Dial-In Data Files
================
The Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3 replaces all Shiva software with the current version and converts the Dial-In Data file to a new format. The Dial-In Data file is a database file for Dial-In and net-to-net connections. The Dial-In Data file used with Version 3.5 or earlier is not compatible with Version 3.7.3 of the Shiva software. The Macintosh Installer converts a Version 3.5 Dial-In Data file to one compatible with 3.7.3. However, new modem strings added for Version 3.7.3 are not automatically available in converted Version 3.5 Dial-In Data files. (The complete list of modem strings appears in the Release Notes file for this release.) To add a modem string to a converted Dial-In Data file, you must use the Shiva Modems application which is installed in your System folder.
NOTE: The Dial-In Data files for Version 3.6.6 are compatible with Version 3.7.3
To ensure that the newly added modem strings appear automatically in Dial-In Network Access and remote network connections, create a new Dial-In Data file:
1. Open your Version 3.5 Dial-In Data file by opening Shiva Config or Dial-In. Write down any network names, phone numbers and settings. You must reenter them after installing the Version 3.7.3 software.
2. Remove the old Dial-In Data file from the System folder.
3. Run the Macintosh Installer, then run Shiva Modems Version 3.7.3. Shiva Modems will create a new Dial-In Data file.
If Shiva Config Version 3.5 has been used under System 7.0, then you must manually remove it and its accompanying Chooser documents by dragging them to the Trash.
There is no need to remove previous versions of Shiva Config before installing Version 3.7.3. However, you can remove the software by launching the Installer application, selecting Customize, and holding down the Option key to change the Install button to a Remove button. For more detailed information, read the “To Remove Software” section.
System 7.0 File Sharing
=====================
This software uses the Apple Installer Version 3.2. Unlike previous versions, Apple Installer Version 3.2 allows you to install onto your current startup disk. Apple Installer Version 3.2 will use an open, active hard drive. Apple Installer Version 3.2 will not allow you to install the software on a non-startup disk if System 7 File Sharing is currently running. If you need to perform this sort of installation, turn off File Sharing first.

Special Considerations
---------------------
If you obtained the Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3 electronically, you can run it from a network server volume or from a local SCSI hard disk (for example, from the non-system volume of a 105 MB hard disk partitioned into two 52-MB volumes).
PowerBook owners can use a floppy disk or attach the PowerBook to a LocalTalk network and install from an AppleShare or System 7 File Sharing volume. You may need to create an Installer floppy disk.
To create a Macintosh Installer disk from the Macintosh Installer.SEA (self-extracting archive) file or the Macintosh Installer.sit (StuffIt) file, please follow these installation instructions:
1. Decompress the archive. If you have the "Macintosh Installer.SEA", you can do this by simply double-clicking the "Macintosh Installer.SEA" file. This creates a folder which contains the contents of a Shiva installation disk. If you have the "Macintosh Installer.sit" file, you must use a copy of StuffIt to decompress the contents of the file. StuffIt also creates a folder containing the contents of a Shiva installation disk.
2.Initialize a floppy disk and name it "Macintosh Installer".
3. Open the "Macintosh Installer" folder created from the downloaded archive file and drag its contents onto the "Macintosh Installer" disk. It is not necessary to place Macintosh system software on the "Macintosh Installer" disk.
4. Go to the next section to install the Shiva software.

Installation Instructions
----------------------
The following sections describe both the Easy Install and the Custom Installation procedure. See the description of each procedure for details.
Easy Install
===========
Easy Install places Shiva Config, all Shiva Chooser documents, and the updated utilities on your Macintosh. It also updates AppleTalk to Version 57.0.3. To use Easy Install follow these steps:
1. Before launching the Installer, disable any anti-virus software that may be running and restart your Macintosh.
NOTE: Failure to disable anti-virus software may result in corruption of the System File. As a precaution, if you are using Virex software on your Macintosh, remove it from the hard disk drive, not just the System Folder, before running the Apple Installer.
2. Insert the Macintosh Installer disk into the floppy drive, or open the "
Macintosh Installer" folder on your SCSI disk or network volume.
3. Start the installation by double-clicking on the Installer (Click Me!) file.
4. A splash screen appears. Click the OK button after reading the information on the screen.
5. Click only the Install button. If an application is open during installation, the Installer warns you that an application is open. Click the Continue button to automatically quit all open applications. Click the Cancel button to terminate the Installer process and leave the disk untouched.
6. When the Installer is finished, click on the Restart button to complete the installation process.
7. Reactivate any anti-virus software after installing the Shiva software and restart your Macintosh.
Custom Installation
==================
Use the Customize installation option to install Shiva Dial-In Network Access software or to install dial-out software for a specific Shiva product(s). To use the Customize feature:
1. Follow steps 1 through 4 in the "Easy Install" section.
2. Click on the Customize button. The following list will appear:

3. If necessary, click the Switch Disk button to select a drive other than the startup drive.
4. To install all Shiva software, select "All Shiva Software" for the appropriate System software version.
5. Click on the Install button, then:
• To install individual Shiva device drivers, click on the desired device (e.g., NetModem).
• To install two or more devices, shift-click on the device names.
• To install Shiva Dial-In, scroll down to Shiva Dial-In and click on it.
Note: Shiva strongly recommends using shift-click to install AppleTalk 57.0.3 with Dial-In Network Access or Shiva device drivers. (Some older Macintosh systems do not have AppleTalk versions that will work with these components.)
6. When the Installer is finished, a message appears telling you that the installation was successful. Restart the Macintosh to complete the installation process.
7. Reactivate any anti-virus software after installing the Shiva software and restart your Macintosh.
To Remove Software
==================
While it is not necessary to remove previous versions of Shiva Config before installing Version 3.7.3, you may want to do so to increase the available disk space. To remove software:
1. While in the Customize window, select the software to be removed.
2. Hold down the Option key. The Install button changes into a Remove button. Click on the Remove button.
Verification Tests
=================
To verify that your Shiva dial-out drivers have been installed correctly, open the Shiva Config Desk Accessory and look at the version numbers for the Driver and the Prefs. They should both be 3.7.3.
